About IIT Madras

Indian Institute of Technology Madras, is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The IIT system has seven Institutes of Technology located at Kharagpur (estb. 1951), Mumbai (estb. 1958), Chennai (estb. 1959), Kanpur (estb. 1959), Delhi (estb. 1961), Guwahati (estb. 1994) and Roorkee (estb. 1847, joined IITs in 2001).

IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 460 faculty, 4500 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. It has established itself as a premier centre for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country.

The Institute has fifteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. Chennai is the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India.

About the Campus

IIT Madras is located in the city of Chennai which is also the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India. Chennai is the fourth largest city in India and comparatively a new city, about 350 years old (1639). The city was formerly known as Madras and was renamed Chennai, which evolved from old name 'Chennapatnam'. Chennai is a coastal city with the second largest beach in the world known as 'Marina' beach. The climate is generally hot and humid. In summer (May - July) the temperature reaches up to 42Â° C (107Â° F) while in winter (Dec. - Feb.) it is slightly less hot, 18Â° C (64Â° F). The Monsoon season starts in September and lasts till November

IIT Madras is situated on Sardar Patel Road and is flanked by Adyar, Taramani and Velachery. The campus is opposite to the Central Leather Research Institute and Anna University. The campus is spread over 250 hectares of lush green forest, which is midway between the Chennai Airport and Central Railway station, and is well connected by buses and local trains.
The campus is around 14 km from the Central Railway station. Adyar is the nearest bus terminus to the campus. The Institute in itself is located around 2.5 km inside the campus. Two parallel roads, Bonn Avenue and Delhi avenue, lead you through the residential zone, under a canopy of green, to Gajendra Circle (otherwise called GC) and the administrative block. Buses ply between the gate and other locations on campus at regular intervals. Named after mountains, the IITM buses take you to the GC, academic zone and hostels (named after rivers) for a nominal fare. (This has infact led to the joke that IIT is the land of moving mountains and stationary rivers!)

Community

IIT Madras campus is spread over 250 hectares of lush green forest with a variety of plants/trees and animals. The campus is divided into 3 zones - Academic, Hostel and Residential. All the academic departments, library, computer centre and the admin building are close to each other so that students can just walk across. Commuting within the campus on bicycles is preferred and is also advocated by many. However, people can avail the institute's pollution-free (battery-powered) bus service within the campus.

Housing

The IIT Madras being a residential institute, provides accommodation to all its students in 13 independent hostels. Each room in a hostel is provided with a cot, a table, a chair, a bookshelf, and a ceiling fan. A washing machine is available in every hostel for use by the residents. Every hostel is provided with telephones and internet connectivity. Each hostel has a mess which functions for its inmates during the working semester. During the winter and summer vacations, special messes are run for students who are required to stay in the hostels for pursuing academic, sports or cultural activities. In addition to the normal messes, there are 2 large, modern, common mega messes catering to a group of hostels.

Sports and Recreation

To ensure overall development of every student, the institute provides all the required facilities for sports and recreation. There is a large Gymnasium, a swimming pool, a football field, a tennis court, a hockey field and a cricket stadium. Each year students participate in the Inter-IIT sports meet. Students can join various clubs existing on the campus. These are Music Club, Astronomy Club, Photography club, Literary club, Astronomy club, Hiking Club, Wild-life club, etc.

Medical Facilities

The institute hospital on the campus is well equipped with a dispensary, clinical laboratory and an operation theater to provide medical care to all the residents round the clock. There are two ambulances to attend to any emergencies. All the students have to register their names at the hospital to avail group medical insurance.

Shopping

The Students' Facilities Centre (SFC) makes available a variety of consumer goods and day-to-day requirements of the students like stationery, toiletries etc. In addition, there is a tailoring shop, a hair cutting saloon, a xerox centre, a telecom centre, and a memorabilia stores selling IIT branded items. There is also a book stall on the campus near the residential zone.

Cultural Activities

A number of literary and social activities take place on the campus through out the year. 'Saarang' is one of the biggest events on the campus every year. In addition, music festivals and other cultural festivals are organized regularly.

Others

The campus has a Post office, a Telecom centre, two Nationalized Banks with ATM facilities and three Restaurants. The campus has a large open air theater (OAT) where the film club screens movies every Saturday.

Admission Tests

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a common admission test for candidates seeking admission to the B.Tech programme. It is conducted by all the seven IITsin the month of April every year. Candidates who have secured 60% (5% relaxation for SC/ST/PD) marks in aggregate in their respective board examination are eligible for the test. The JEE will be a single objective type examination which will test the comprehension and analytical abilities of students. For more details refer to the JEE brochure.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India Examination conducted by all the IITs and IISc to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Post-graduate programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Pharmacy at National level.Information relating to GATE will be available through the announcements link and the GATE Brochure.

The Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) is a common admission test for candidates seeking admission to the MBA programme at all the IITs and IISc. However, the candidates will have to apply separately to each IIT and IISc as per their choices. The application forms and the details for each Institute are provided with the JMET booklet and brochure. The JMET is usually conducted in December every year and the results of the test are announced a month later.

The Joint Admission Test for MSc (JAM) is an all India examination conducted to provide admissions to various M. Sc. (Two Year) / M. Sc.-Ph. D. Dual Degree and other post-B. Sc. programmes based on the performance in a single test and consolidate 'Science' as a career option for bright students from across the country.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) is an admission test for 5 year integrated Masters of Arts (M.A) degree programme in the following disciplines: Economics, English Studies and Development Studies. Students who have passed their 12th standard examination in India can apply for admission into this programme. This unique and innovative masters programme started in 2007-08 is available only in IIT Madras.

he Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi established the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University under the provisions of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Act 1998. The University Grants Commission of India recognizes the University. The main aim of the University is to foster research and extension work in emerging fields of higher education. The focus is on disciplines of engineering, technology, architecture, management,

medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing, education, law, journalism and mass communication, etc. the motive is also to achieve expertise and excellence in the fields of study. The university awards various degrees like B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA, M.Sc., B.Arch., BCA, BBA, MBA, BMC, BCAM, B.Pharma, BPT, BHMCT, B.Ed., LLB (Hons), MAHM, MCPHM, MHRPD, BHMS, MBBS and Ph.D etc.

The University was established as the University of Punjab in Lahore (now in Pakistan) in 1882. After the partition of the country, Lahore became a part of the newly formed state of Pakistan and a separate university with the name of Punjab University was established in 1956.
Punjab University, over the days, has come to be highly regarded as a respected institution of higher education in the country. While it has continued to focus on the traditional subjects, the vicissitudes of time has seen the university also starting programmes in the emerging fields. Studying in an IIT or Indian Institute of Technology is the first thing that every ambitious engineering aspirant can think of in India. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee are the seven IITs in India that are also termed as National Institutes of Importance. Set up under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1963, IITs are statutory bodies. The central administration of the IITs is looked after by the IIT Council. IITc Council is the apex body which is headed by the Human Resource Department of Indian Government.

Beside the existing seven IITs, nine more IITs have been proposed to be set up in different parts of the country. These states are - Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Orissa, Bihar and Punjab. IT-BHU will also be converted into an IIT. For a nation which is huge in every dimension needs some more institutes of high standard technology education.

Development of IITs

* The foundation for the IITs in India was laid in 1946 by the Executive Council of Viceroy, Sir Jogendra Singh.
* The main aim was to develop a technical structure to aid the industrial development in the country.
* On May 1950, the first Indian Institute of Technology was set up in Kharagpur.
* By 1961 four more such institutes were established in Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai and Delhi.
* IIT Guwahati was established in 1994.
* In 2001, University of Roorkee was granted IIT status. This formed the seventh campus of the IITs in India.

adrassa education in India aims at educating Muslim children living in this country. Madrassas were originally established to spread the message of Islam and impart religious teaching on its followers. The Ulamas, a group of religious specialists used to perform the role of teachers in Madrassa to spread Islam outside the Arabian Peninsula. A Madrassa was as treated as a high school or college earlier. In the Islamic era, there were thousands of Madrassas which were as big as some universities today. They were full with exhibit museums, libraries and visiting scholar programs.

Great scholars and professors dedicated their lives in the Madrassas for learning the philosophy of Islam, the Farsi language, and more significantly, to broaden knowledge among ordinary public.

Monarchs as well as masses were educated in the Madrassas in the yesteryears. And even today Madrassa education in India has played a vital role in educating thousands of Muslim children. The importance of Madrassas lies in its potential to make education available to the poorer section of the society.

The National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA),New Delhi emerged into the country’s educational scene in 1960-61. It was mainly due to an effort by UNESCO to set up a regional center for educational planning and administration not only in India but in the whole of South Asia. It was in 1970 that the authority of NUEPA changed hands and came under the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India with its new name as the National Staff College. The University acquired its present name in 1979 and became an autonomous body. As a mark of recognition to its outstanding contribution in the field of planning, management and capacity building, the Human Resource Ministry of India conferred the Deemed University status on NUEPA in August 2006.
While the University building is situated in the foothills of the Aravalli range, the campus is conveniently located in Sri Aurobindo Marg lying in close proximity to NCERT and IIT Delhi. Admissions to UG courses in PEC are conducted on the basis of ranks that students secure in the AIEEE. The admission to a particular branch is decided by the Joint Admission Committee.

As per the record of the Department of Higher Education, Government of in India, there are more than109 Deemed Universities in India today. The Central Govt of India, which establishes the Central Universities in India, are also entrusted with the responsibility of declaring an educational institution as a Deemed University. However the declaration is made on the recommendation of University Grant Commission (UGC) of India. Among other things, the UGC is entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the standard of higher of education in India. Yashwant Rao Chavan Open University (YCMOU) came into being in July 1989 by an act promulgated by the Maharashtra State Legislature. It is the 5th Open University of India. Situated in Nasik, it has jurisdiction over the whole of Maharashtra. YCMOU carries on its functions through 8 regional centers located in cities like Amaravati, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Mumbai, Nagpur, Nanded, Nasik and Pune. The Karnataka State Open University came into being in 1996 by an act promulgated by the Karnataka State Assembly, known as the Karnataka State Open University Act. KSOU evolved from the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education of the Mysore University. It is the 8th Open University of India. It is situated on a 15 acre land lying on the Mysore- Mangalore highway, within the campus of Mysore University. This university has its jurisdiction over whole of Karnataka and operates through its wide network of study centers in cities like Bagalkote, Bangalore, Bellary, Belgaum, Chikmanglur, Dharwad, Kolar, Raichur, Shimoga and others. It has 13 departments handled by 57 faculty members.

The Mizoram University in Aizawl, Mizoram came into existence on 2nd July, 2001 and is a Central University. The University campus is located in a breathtakingly beautiful place called Tanhril surrounded by lush green hills on all sides. The campus area has been given on lease by the Government of Mizoram, to the University.
Currently, the University has in its fold 29 under-graduate colleges and 2 professionally managed institutes. Aligarh Muslim University is in Aligarh, a city in Uttar Pradesh, India. This Central University came into existence with the initiative taken by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who was involved in social activities concerning the Mohammedan community in India. While other universities in the country are established by the State Governments, a Central University in India is formed by the Government of India, by an Act of Parliament.

The Government of India is responsible for arranging, allocating and distributing financial resources required by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the establishment of Central Universities in India. Currently there are 20 Central Universities in India. The higher education system in India being one of the largest in the world, the responsibility rests on the Central Government to devise policies with a view to improving the quality of higher education in India.Improving the quality and access of higher education and research in India has become all the more important keeping in

view the growing need of qualified human resources in various sectors of the economy. Therefore it can only be hoped that there would be more central universities in India in the immediate future.

Since the State Governments establish and plan for the colleges and universities in the states and the Central Government does it for the Central Universities, it is essential that there is adequate cooperation between the State Governments and the Central Government in the field of higher education. The Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) has therefore been constituted to assist in the functioning of the two Governments and ensure that parity is maintained.

The Central Government has also been empowered by a special act of the Constitution to maintain a particular standard conducive to the educational health of the country. The Central Government lays special emphasis on research and development carried out in technical as well as other institutions.

Genesis of the UCA
During the 20th century, the establishment of two research stations, one in Karimganj (1913) and the other in Titabor (1923) paved the way, immediately after independence, the constitution of the Assam Agricultural College (AAC) in Jorhat and the Assam Veterinary College (AVC) in Nagaon in 1948. Later, on April 1, 1969, Assam Agricultural University came into being through "The Assam Agricultural University Act 1968, AAC and renaming the College of Agriculture based in Jorhat and stroke, Faculty of Veterinary Science, while changing the site to Khanapara Nagaon.
Subsequently, the Faculty of Home (1969), College of Fisheries (1988), Biswanath College of Agriculture (1988) and Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science (1988) were established. Anna University was base on September 4,1978 as a unitary type of university. It offers higher education in engineering, technology and related sciences to current needs and projected society.Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between learning and industrial communities.

The University was formed by convergence and integrating two well-known
technical institutions in the city of Madras.Located in the southern city of Madras the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares adjoining the Adyar River in the north and Raj Bhavan in the south. The Madras Institute of Technology Chrompet is the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares. Both campuses have a variety of buildings of the various needs of the university community. A third campus add to over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is currently on this campus and a few advanced research centers like the National Institute of Fashion Technology Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entrepreneurship Development Park,Center Convention and will also be installed there in the future.

Since December 2001, has become a large, prestigious university affiliated, have brought in about 426 breast self-financing Engineering Colleges six Government Colleges and three engineering colleges assisted by the Government in various parts of the state of Tamil Nadu .
